Responsibilities
Thesis Coordinator
- Offer initial counsel to students interested in writing a thesis.
- Schedule and resource thesis preparation workshops.
- Consult with the Academic Dean regarding Adviser assignments.
- Submit thesis proposals to the Academic Dean for presentation to the Academic Committee.
- Schedule thesis defenses.
- Attend all the thesis defenses.
Student
- Participate in Thesis Preparation Workshops.
- Consult with the Thesis Coordinator to identify topic and possible Adviser.
- Recruit potential Adviser and receive approval of choice of Adviser from the Thesis Coordinator.
- Prepare thesis proposal in consultation with Adviser.
- Submit thesis proposal to Thesis Coordinator.
- Present thesis proposal to academic committee.
- Research and write the thesis in consultation with the Adviser.
- Secure and pay for the services of a grammarian unless waived by the Adviser. Referrals to recommended grammarians are available from the Thesis Coordinator.
- Guarantee the accuracy and integrity of the thesis.
- Make all corrections as required by the Adviser, Second Reader, or Grammarian.
- Arrange for a copy of the thesis to be placed on reserve in the library and prepare an abstract.
- In consultation with the Adviser, Second Reader and Thesis Coordinator, schedule a public defense of the thesis, reserve space and announce the event via The Pipeline.
- Defend the thesis publicly.
- Submit the corrected copy to the Adviser for signature.
- Submit the signed copy to the registrar.
- Pay the costs involved in copying and binding the required two copies for MBBS (and any additional copies bound at the student's request.)
Adviser
- Agree to be the Adviser after soliciting the approval of the Academic Dean.
- Work with the student to develop the thesis proposal.
- Select the Second Reader, in consultation with the Thesis Coordinator. Recommend the Second Reader to the Academic Committee for approval as part of the thesis proposal.
- Attend the proposal meeting with the student.
- Work with the student at all stages of thesis research and writing.
- Assess progress after one semester to determine whether the student should change to Senior Seminar or continue with thesis writing.
- Determine when the thesis is ready for defense.
- Chair the oral defense.
- Sign the final copy of the thesis.
- Submit a grade for the thesis to the Registrar.
Second Reader
- Read the draft of the full thesis before the oral presentation, paying particular attention to substance and interpretation.
- Communicate any suggestions about the thesis directly to the Adviser.
- Attend and participate in the oral defense.
- Consult with Adviser regarding final grade.
Academic Dean
- Approve the Adviser.
- Chair the Academic Committee as it approves the thesis proposal and Second Reader.
Registrar's Office
- Submit the thesis to the library for binding.
- Record the grade given by the Thesis Adviser.
- Mail the student their bound copy (if bound by the library).
Librarian
- Bind and process the completed thesis.
