Appendix A: Guidelines for Research with Human Subjects

  1. Projects which involve obtaining data from subjects should be reviewed by the Academic Committee. The researcher should be present for the Committee review. In the case of a student project, the Committee shall assign a Research Adviser. In projects related to MBBS' Research Course and in cases where the Academic Committee is not in a position to meet, the Academic Dean and the Research Instructor can perform the Humans Subjects Review and approve the project.
  2. The research project should reflect careful preparation in terms of design, validity and reliability of instruments, and data analysis. It is the researcher's responsibility to give consideration to the consequences resulting from the study.
  3. Subjects should be informed about the purpose of the study, and the responsibilities of the researcher and of the subjects. The subjects should be given the opportunity to decline participation before the project or during the project if they so wish. A research agreement between the researcher and participants may be required in certain cases.
  4. Subjects should be informed how the results will be used and how the results of the study will be made public.
  5. Researchers should avoid using deception in order to obtain the data.
  6. The principal researcher bears the responsibility for work done by subordinates.
  7. Individual information provided during a study is confidential unless subjects waive confidentiality.
